In the early 90’s while searching for vinyl in San Francisco’s record stores we found a record called the “Da San Tranzdisco EP by Funky Tribalists (DJ EFX & DJ Digit)”. This record introduced a sound, a passion, a movement, quite frankly a lot things that still remain. One particular artist from the San Francisco house scene deserves more credit and recognition for his underground involvement than noted, DJ EFX (Raul Recinos). DJ EFX is responsible for many tribal latin funk house tracks that has had a direct influence on fans & artists alike. We’ll keep this simple, as Raul would like it for now. We are sure there is more to be said about his history and all the tracks he’s touched. This is the real Tribal Mofo, DJ EFX (Much Respect!).

We usually ask a range of questions specific to each artist, at times we feel as a media site, what are we really sharing? Is it new? Are we contributing to music that will be quality and timeless?….. catching up with Raul Recinos(DJ EFX), finding his tracks and getting more info is pretty tricky.

DJ EFX: “To be honest, I do not have a Top 5 picks, I feel that globally we are all guilty of musical incest, since we are all copying from each other without offering something new. I was listening to some underground tunes from the 90´s and everything today sounds exactly like back then. The machines or may I say, the samples of those machines are still being used in the same fashion. House music of today is not as fun or refreshing, it does not inspire a new sound, I feel it does not release anything but repetition from the past.” :)

Was it the worn leather seats at the bar that were beckoning us to come inside and stay a while…or was it the eclectic mix of vintage prohibition liquors that lined the smoked glass shelving on the decaying brick wall that were calling our names on a sunny Sunday afternoon? Either of those options are perfectly plausible, considering the locale of this modern speakeasy bar on the infamous Haight Street in San Francisco. The atmosphere of this Vaudville inspired bar channeled the quirkiness of Charlie Chaplin, the sex appeal of Mae West and the mystery of a Noir Film.

The Alembic Bar served much more than non traditional cocktails (that will knock you on your ass till next Thursday, might I add), they served class, style and a little bit of nostalgia…all in a vintage brandy glass. And that, my friends, is a rare find. So many times we plan our days and nights with no room for the unexpected, no room to experience something new and tantalizing. Letting go of preconceived notions of status and the need to be on a guest list every Friday night will open up opportunities to encounter something truly worth savoring, sip by sip.

Alland has quickly grown to be one of the most in-demand Techno talents that SF has to offer, and after performing live at Seattle‘s Decibel Festival and DJing at Lovefest SF this year, it’s obvious that 2009 promises to be a huge year for both Alland and his label, Nightlight Music.

In a sea of heads, Clint Stewart can’t contain his enthusiasm. “It’s an amazing time for dance music,” says the Auralism assistant label manager. “There’s so much good music and an endless list of people making it. It’s inspiring.” Since joining the Auralism camp, Stewart has been “going 100 miles an hour, all day, every day,” playing high-profile DJ gigs with top artists among as well as a particularly sizzling set at SF’s annual LoveFest. In addition pounding the pavement for Auralism, Stewart has a growing list of productions out there, including a pair of ecstatic remixes for the label’s inaugural Aural Therapy 1.1 compilation. That’s a lot of work for a short time in a new town, but master multi-tasker Stewart’s just getting started.
